Reach Out
‘Reach Out’, 48 x 60”, acrylic, paper and spray paint on canvas.
‘Reach Out’ is about confronting ourselves and interacting with our feelings and past trauma, no matter how uncomfortable they may be. The intimacy created by the close crop of the portrait forces the viewer to stop and take in the subject’s gaze. The moths carry different meanings historically, yet they serve as a reminder that something that may seem threatening or uncomfortable for us on the surface, may be the solution. Moths are attracted to light, and this piece is meant to evoke a curiosity and intimacy with the subject.
Within the wings of the Moth, you’ll notice snippets of collaged paper sourced during an art residency in Mexico City in 2025. Initially, when viewing the painting the collaged elements only seem to form the texture of the Moths wings, but upon closer inspection, you notice that details emerge, snippets of a story.
